新加坡南洋华侨中学之倡议与创校始末

摘要：南洋华侨中学从1919年建校至2019年已有100年。这所中学在南洋华人教育史上有着极其重要的意义:第一,它是南洋华人办学历史上打破方言帮群畛域的一杆重要旗帜;第二,它标志着南洋华人基础教育学制与升阶上的完善化;第三,它标志着南洋华文学校教学与管理上的质量提升以及统一化与规范化。而这些重要意义,唯有重新检阅一百多年前先贤们倡办中学的呼吁与殷望才能真正体现出来。本文主要根据1913年至1920年的各种报章报道资料,分析当初南洋华人“三度”倡办中学时前赴后继的努力。本文通过梳理这一系列南洋华人倡办中学运动的历史脉络,希望由此还原这所中学真实的历史定位。

The Proposal and Founding of The Chinese High School

Abstract: The Chinese High School in Singapore was established 100 years ago in 1919. This high school signifies an important milestone in the education history of Southeast Asian Chinese. First, it symbolized the significant achievement of a collaborated effort among all different dialect groups in Southeast Asia in its education history. Second, it symbolized the perfection of the Chinese elementary education system in Southeast Asia. Third, it symbolized the overall uplifting and standardization of the teaching and administrative processes in Southeast Asian Chinese schools. These significances are only apparent by looking back more than 100 years ago when the early Chinese urged for the establishment of a high school. This paper, with reference mainly to newspaper articles during the period of 1913 to 1920, analyzes the entire process of a “three attempts” to propose for establishing a high school. This paper, by means of a chronological description of the historical development of this middle school movement among Southeast Asian Chinese, aims to restore the true historical role and significance of this high school.
